Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition

Step back into the colorful world of vintage French theater with Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition, a one-of-a-kind hand-cut wooden jigsaw puzzle featuring artwork by Jules Chéret (1889).

This wonderfully theatrical French advertising poster is filled with performers, musicians, clowns, and bold period typography. Rich reds, yellows, and blacks contrast with the aged appearance of the original artwork, creating a puzzle with unmistakable nineteenth-century character.

The Art of Hand Cutting

But the artwork is only half the story.

Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition features a free-form cutting style that moves away from the familiar rows, columns, knobs, and sockets of a conventional jigsaw puzzle.

The pieces twist and flow into one another in irregular, organic shapes, with no predictable pattern to guide the solver. Some are long and slender, others branch in several directions, while still others seem to curl around their neighbors.

Turn the puzzle over, and you'll discover an entirely different work of art—one created through the cutting itself.

Measuring approximately 12" × 4.5" and containing 151 individually hand-cut pieces, the puzzle's unusual long, narrow format complements the proportions of the original theatrical poster.

Don't be fooled by the relatively modest piece count. The unconventional cutting style makes orientation, shape recognition, and careful observation essential parts of the solving experience.

Each piece is individually cut by hand on a scroll saw, without computer-generated patterns or laser cutting. The finished puzzle is signed and dated on the reverse.

Part artwork, part puzzle, and part piece of theatrical history, Grand Théâtre de l'Exposition offers a very different experience from a mass-produced jigsaw.

Every M Squared Puzzle is cut individually by hand—making the cut itself as much a part of the puzzle as the picture.
